Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir has said Bangladesh and India are working together to finalise Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India.
The date and schedule of the visit will be finalised through discussions between the two sides at a mutually convenient time, he said.
Kabir made the remarks in an interview with a private television channel after taking charge of the Foreign Ministry on Monday.
Asked about the prime minister’s possible India visit, the state minister said, “Both countries are working on it. The date of the visit will be finalised at a time convenient for both Dhaka and New Delhi.”
His comments came amid reports that the two countries have been holding discussions over Tarique Rahman’s first visit to India since becoming prime minister.
Kabir also described recent remarks by Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar on Bangladesh-India relations as positive.
He said maintaining a balance in diplomacy while protecting Bangladesh’s national interests would be one of his key responsibilities.
“Bangladesh’s bilateral relations will be based on equality and fairness,” he said.
The state minister’s remarks suggest that Dhaka is seeking to strengthen engagement with New Delhi while maintaining a foreign policy centred on national interests and mutual respect.
