Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has written to Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman amid discussions over Bangladesh’s possible participation in the recently signed Mecca Joint Defence Agreement.
The letter was handed over to Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud by Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir on Thursday during a meeting on the sidelines of an extraordinary meeting of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Jeddah.
During the meeting, the two sides expressed satisfaction with the positive progress in bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to taking the Bangladesh-Saudi partnership to a new level.
The Saudi foreign minister highlighted the importance of expanding economic cooperation and said Bangladesh is among Saudi Arabia’s priority countries for investment.
He also expressed interest in expanding investment and business activities by Saudi companies in Bangladesh.
Prince Faisal also praised the contribution of Bangladeshi expatriates to Saudi Arabia’s development. State Minister Humayun Kabir invited the Saudi foreign minister to visit Bangladesh at a convenient time.
The development comes as Bangladesh is considering whether to join the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, signed by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan on August 7.
The pact stipulates that an armed attack on any one of the three members would be treated as an attack on all three.
Bangladesh’s possible participation in the pact has attracted attention because it could have implications for the country’s traditionally balanced foreign policy and its relations with regional powers.
