Peru has announced that it is severing diplomatic relations with Iran, citing concerns over the deterioration of democracy and alleged repression of peaceful protesters, political opponents and independent journalists.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 2, Peru’s Foreign Ministry said the decision was made in accordance with the country’s commitment to peace, democracy and respect for international law.
Peru expressed deep concern over what it described as the “deterioration of democracy” in Iran. It accused Iranian authorities of suppressing peaceful demonstrations, restricting independent journalism, discriminating against women and girls, and persecuting opposition political leaders.
Lima also raised concerns about disruptions to international trade through the Strait of Hormuz since March. Peru warned that prolonged instability along the strategically important waterway could further increase energy prices in international markets.
The Peruvian government also blamed Iran for contributing to the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. However, the wider conflict has also involved military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran.
According to the report, the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran in February, killing Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran condemned the attacks as aggression and responded with retaliatory measures.
Peru’s decision marks the end of its longstanding diplomatic relations with Iran and represents a significant shift in Lima’s policy toward Tehran.
