Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said the issue of extraditing controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik was among the matters discussed during his talks with Indian leaders.
In an exclusive interview with NDTV on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Anwar said the issue had been raised in discussions with India.
However, he indicated that Malaysia’s position was guided by due process and its own legal considerations.
Naik, an Indian-born Islamic preacher, has been living in Malaysia for years. India has sought his extradition in connection with allegations against him, while Naik has denied wrongdoing.
Anwar’s remarks come as India and Malaysia seek to strengthen bilateral ties, with the two countries discussing trade, defence and other areas of cooperation during the Malaysian leader’s visit to India.
