Dhaka, Beijing discuss defence cooperation

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen held a courtesy meeting with Prime Minister’s Defence Adviser Brig Gen (Retd) Dr AKM Shamsul Islam on Thursday.
The meeting took place at the Defence Adviser’s Office at the Armed Forces Division in Dhaka Cantonment, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
During the meeting, both sides recalled the longstanding and historic friendship between Bangladesh and China and discussed ways to deepen bilateral defence and technological cooperation, as well as elevate the two countries’ strategic partnership.
According to the ISPR, the discussions also focused on expanding advanced training opportunities in China for members of the Bangladesh Armed Forces and promoting technology transfer to strengthen Bangladesh’s self-reliance in the defence sector.
Beyond conventional military cooperation, the two sides stressed the importance of joint initiatives to enhance cybersecurity.
They also exchanged views on regional and global geopolitical developments and reaffirmed their commitment to working together to promote peace and stability in the region.
The defence adviser appreciated China’s continued support for Bangladesh’s infrastructure and defence sectors.
The Chinese ambassador, in turn, praised the government’s efforts to modernise the Bangladesh Armed Forces and expressed Beijing’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral defence cooperation.
