Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom has assured Bangladesh that electricity from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will be supplied to the national grid as soon as possible.

The assurance comes as Bangladesh moves forward with commissioning the country’s first nuclear power plant in Pabna.

The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) on Thursday approved the first unit of the plant to begin its first controlled nuclear reaction, known as first criticality, bringing it closer to electricity generation.

However, two more regulatory approvals are required before the unit can be connected to the national grid.

Technical problems involving the unit’s automatic pressure-relief safety valves had delayed the commissioning process.

Russian experts subsequently resolved the issues, and the valves passed the required tests.

If the remaining stages are completed successfully, trial electricity supply to the national grid could begin by the end of December, according to project officials.
