Bangladesh-Turkiye ties rooted in centuries-old tradition: Jamaat chief

Bangladesh-Turkiye relations are rooted in a centuries-old tradition and will continue to grow stronger, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman has said.

He made the remarks while addressing the Second International Conference on Bangladesh Studies at Istanbul University in Turkiye on Friday.

“The relationship between Bangladesh and Turkiye is not a recent development or one limited to just a few decades.

Rather, we have centuries-old traditional ties with the people of Turkiye, and these relations will advance further in the future,” he said.

The international conference was jointly organised by Istanbul University and the Centre for Policy and Social Research (CPSR) under the theme “Multidimensional Perspectives on Reforms in Bangladesh 2.0 and New Horizons for Bangladesh-Turkiye Cooperation”.

Academics, policymakers, diplomats, researchers and representatives of various organisations from Bangladesh, Turkiye and other countries attended the event.

Discussions focused on Bangladesh’s ongoing reform process, future state-building and opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Former adviser to the Turkish president and Yildirim Beyazit University professor Yasin Aktay, and Swansea University professor Mokarram Hossain of the United Kingdom, delivered keynote speeches.

Istanbul University Vice-Rector Professor Mehmet Adak delivered the inaugural address, while representatives from the Turkish parliament and Bangladeshi lawmakers also attended the confdecades
