Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed will not attend the first-ever meeting of home ministers of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), scheduled to be held in New Delhi on Tuesday.
A four-member Bangladeshi delegation led by Home Ministry Senior Secretary Monzur Morshed Chowdhury will represent the country at the meeting.
Home ministers and state ministers from the other six BIMSTEC member states are expected to attend the meeting, which will be chaired by Indian Home Minister Amit Shah.
Senior officials from the member states’ home ministries will hold a separate meeting on October 12, a day before the ministerial meeting.
According to diplomatic sources, discussions will focus on strengthening regional cooperation to combat terrorism and cross-border crime, including human trafficking, drug smuggling, money laundering and terrorist financing.
The meeting will also consider recommendations from the 11th meeting of the BIMSTEC Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime, held in Delhi on September 28–29.
BIMSTEC comprises Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal and Bhutan. Bangladesh assumed the bloc’s chairmanship in April 2025.
