DHAKA: Germany is seeking to strengthen its long-standing development partnership with Bangladesh as the country prepares for a major economic transition and graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.

A delegation from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), led by Vice Minister Dr Bärbel Kofler, is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on Sunday for a three-day official visit.

The visit underscores Germany’s continued commitment to working with Bangladesh as a strategic partner in sustainable development, the German Embassy in Dhaka said in a statement on Saturday.

The delegation’s discussions with Bangladeshi officials will focus on the future of bilateral development cooperation, with an emphasis on long-term resilience, economic adaptability and sustainable growth.

Government-to-government (G2G) negotiations are expected to play a central role in shaping the next phase of cooperation, moving beyond traditional aid frameworks towards a partnership better suited to Bangladesh’s changing economic circumstances.

The visit comes at a significant juncture as Bangladesh navigates economic transformation and prepares to graduate from LDC status, a transition that will require stronger economic competitiveness, greater resilience and the capacity to adapt to changing global conditions.

Germany has long been one of Bangladesh’s key development partners. However, as the country moves towards graduation, the nature of international cooperation will also need to evolve, the Embassy said.

During her stay, Dr Kofler will hold political talks with Bangladeshi counterparts and visit development projects in Chattogram.

She will also attend a celebration of German Reunification Day at the German Embassy in Dhaka. The occasion commemorates the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990, following decades of division during the Cold War.

The event is expected to bring together senior government officials, civil society representatives, members of the diplomatic community, and prominent cultural and media figures from Bangladesh and Germany.

The visit is expected to provide an opportunity to reaffirm bilateral ties and discuss how development cooperation can support Bangladesh’s longer-term economic and sustainable development priorities.
