Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has reaffirmed Japan’s strong support for Bangladesh’s new government following a summit meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who is visiting Japan.

In a social media post after Tuesday’s meeting, Takaichi welcomed the progress of Rahman’s administration, highlighting shared values such as democracy and the rule of law.

She pledged Japan’s firm support for the new government’s efforts to build the country following what she described as a democratic general election.

The two leaders discussed various aspects of bilateral cooperation, including Bangladesh’s role in advancing the vision of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) and the Bay of Bengal Industrial Growth Belt (BIG-B) initiative to promote economic development in both countries.

According to Takaichi’s post, Tarique Rahman expressed deep gratitude to Japan for recognising Bangladesh as a peaceful nation and for the long-standing support and cooperation extended by the Japanese government and people across various sectors.

Takaichi also highlighted Bangladesh’s potential as a major market connecting Southeast Asia and South Asia, describing the country’s strategic position as important to Japan’s economy.

She said a joint statement had been issued following the meeting, reflecting the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Both sides will work together with the private sector to help Bangladesh and Japan achieve greater strength and prosperity, she added.
