The government believes that the proposed economic corridor linking Bangladesh with China through Myanmar could have a positive impact on the country’s economy, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir has said.

Speaking to journalists at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday after seeing off Liu Haixing, minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China, Kabir said Dhaka had no geopolitical concerns over the proposed corridor.

He said the initiative could boost Bangladesh’s economy through improved connectivity, but stressed that the Rohingya crisis must be resolved before the project moves forward.

The state minister also commented on discussions about former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s possible return to Bangladesh in December.

Describing the discussion as ridiculous, he called Hasina a fugitive terrorist and said the issue was not about her return but her transfer under an existing prisoner exchange agreement.
