Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen has reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation, including support for the Teesta River project, greater market access for Bangladeshi products, potential high-speed rail connectivity and continued mediation in resolving the Rohingya crisis.

The ambassador made the remarks as the special guest at a seminar organised by the Bangladesh-China Friendship Association at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital on Saturday.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Adviser and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir attended the event as the chief guest.

Yao said Bangladesh-China relations are now at one of the strongest points in their history, adding that recent high-level exchanges have further deepened the two countries’ strategic partnership.

He said China remains committed to supporting Bangladesh’s long-term development in key areas, including infrastructure, trade, connectivity and regional stability.

Reaffirming Beijing’s support for the Teesta River project, the ambassador said China is sincerely working to help implement the initiative

Feasibility studies are progressing, and Beijing is ready to provide the necessary technical and financial assistance.

He said the project would significantly improve water management, agriculture and the environment in Bangladesh’s northern region.

On trade, Yao noted that a protocol signed during the Bangladeshi chief adviser’s recent visit to China will allow the export of fresh jackfruit to the Chinese market.

Following the opening of the Chinese market to Bangladeshi mangoes, he said the move would create new opportunities for the country’s agricultural sector.

The ambassador also highlighted prospects for enhanced transport connectivity, saying work on the Bangladesh-China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (BCMEC) is progressing.

He added that the possibility of introducing China’s high-speed rail technology in Bangladesh is being seriously considered, potentially paving the way for bullet train services on key routes such as Dhaka-Chattogram.

On the Rohingya issue, Yao said the evolving political situation in Myanmar has created new opportunities for dialogue.

He said China would continue to play a constructive mediating role to facilitate talks between Bangladesh and Myanmar and support efforts toward a sustainable solution to the repatriation crisis.
