Teesta flows above danger level

The water level of the Teesta River has started rising again due to continuous rainfall and upstream hill runoff, with the river flowing 13 centimetres above the danger level at the Dalia point since Wednesday morning.

This marks the seventh time during the current monsoon season that the Teesta has crossed its danger level, according to the Bangladesh Water Development Board.

Officials said the river began rising rapidly on Tuesday night. The increase in water levels has inundated several low-lying areas, including Purba Chatnai and Tepakharibari in Dimla upazila, while houses and croplands along the riverbanks have also gone under water.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Rangpur, Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions, as well as in adjoining upstream areas.

As a result, low-lying areas along rivers in these divisions may experience short-term flooding over the coming days, the centre warned.
