Rising river levels triggered by heavy rainfall and upstream flows have pushed the Kushiyara and Someswari rivers above their danger marks, raising fears of flooding and inundation in at least 14 districts across Bangladesh.
According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), river levels in the country’s northern, northeastern and central regions are rising rapidly, increasing the risk of fresh flooding in low-lying areas.
The FFWC said the Kushiyara River is flowing above the danger level at the Fenchuganj point in Sylhet and the Markuli point in Sunamganj. The Someswari River has also crossed the danger mark at the Kalmakanda point in Netrokona.
Water levels in the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers are approaching warning levels in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha and Kurigram, posing a risk of inundation in adjacent low-lying areas.
The BWDB also warned that water levels in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system are likely to continue rising over the next several days, increasing the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura, Sirajganj and Tangail.
Meanwhile, water levels in the Ganges-Padma river system are also showing a rising trend.
BWDB officials said continued heavy rainfall in upstream regions is contributing to the increase in river levels, which could lead to flooding in low-lying and riverbank areas. The FFWC is closely monitoring the situation and has advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow official safety instructions.
