Bangladeshis increased their credit card spending by about Tk 398 crore in one month. Overseas spending rose by around Tk 225 crore, while domestic spending increased by more than Tk 173 crore.
In contrast, credit card spending by foreign nationals staying in Bangladesh fell by about Tk 71 crore, according to the latest Bangladesh Bank report on credit card transactions.
On 12 August, Wednesday, Bangladesh Bank data showed that Bangladeshis spent Tk 812 crore through credit cards abroad in May.
The amount rose to Tk 1,037 crore in June, marking an increase of about Tk 225 crore in a month.
The United States recorded the highest spending by Bangladeshis through credit cards in June, at Tk 85 crore 1 lakh.
Thailand followed with Tk 58 crore 5 lakh, Saudi Arabia with Tk 49 crore, the United Kingdom with Tk 46 crore 2 lakh, Singapore with Tk 40 crore 4 lakh, India with Tk 37 crore, Malaysia with Tk 33 crore, Canada with Tk 24 crore, the Netherlands with Tk 22 crore and Australia with Tk 18 crore.
Bangladeshis also spent Tk 16 crore in Ireland and around Tk 95 crore in other countries through credit cards.
Domestic credit card spending by Bangladeshis also increased in June. Spending stood at Tk 4,287 crore in May and rose to Tk 4,461 crore in June, representing an increase of more than Tk 173 crore in a month.
Meanwhile, credit card spending by foreign nationals in Bangladesh declined. Foreigners spent Tk 312 crore 4 lakh through credit cards in May, which fell to Tk 241 crore 5 lakh in June. Their spending therefore declined by about Tk 71 crore in one month.
US citizens recorded the highest credit card spending in Bangladesh in June at Tk 49 crore 8 lakh. UK citizens followed with Tk 22 crore 9 lakh, while Indian citizens spent Tk 18 crore 9 lakh.
The Bangladesh Bank report provides monthly data on credit card use by Bangladeshi and foreign nationals within Bangladesh, as well as by Bangladeshis abroad. The figures show that Bangladeshi card spending increased both domestically and overseas from May to June, while foreign nationals reduced their card spending in Bangladesh.
