Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has finally spoken out amid ongoing debate over who will have the authority to recruit teachers at private MPO-listed educational institutions.
“If a decision has to be made on an issue, it will be discussed at a meeting. A resolution will then come to me (the minister). Is the decision in that resolution the minister’s decision? Is it a state decision, a decision of the prime minister, or a party decision?” he said.
The minister made the remarks as the chief guest at an event held at the BARC auditorium in the capital on Tuesday (August 11), while speaking about teacher recruitment.
Criticising protests against the initiative to hand over teacher recruitment at private MPO-listed institutions to managing committees, Milon said, “Last night, I heard that processions were being held at Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka University and Jagannath University. They said MPO teachers’ recruitment had been handed over to management committees.
Someone from the ministry secretly gave someone a portion of the minutes of a meeting, cutting out the discussion. But the part below that says the minister will review and examine it, after which a government notification will be issued. That part was not given, and the news was published in newspapers.” He added, “No one thought about it even once.

Referring to the shortage of teachers in schools and colleges, the education minister said, “There are 38,000 vacancies for headmasters in primary schools. There are no teachers in colleges. There is a shortage of 12,000 teachers in government schools. There is a shortage of 50,000 teachers in primary schools. There is a shortage of 77,000 teachers in MPO-listed schools and colleges. Did all this happen in the last five months? Journalists also need to find that out.”
