Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan said on Tuesday that the government is seriously considering introducing a separate pay scale for teachers.

“Teachers’ salaries should not be determined by comparing them with those of other professions,” he said, stressing the need for a separate salary structure in recognition of teachers’ vital role in nation-building.

The minister made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at a workshop titled Khelay Khelay Shikhi at a hotel in Dhaka.

Responding to a question about improving teachers’ living standards, he said the government was considering the issue as a long-term priority. He added that several proposals from different teacher organisations required further discussion.

“We can develop a separate pay scale for teachers that cannot be compared with any other profession,” he said, adding that teachers’ dignity should not be measured against that of other professions.

The minister also highlighted the shortage of teachers at the primary and secondary levels. He said recruitment had been delayed for years due to legal and administrative complications but the government was now working to complete the process as quickly as possible.

He also stressed the importance of expanding technical and job-oriented education to turn the country’s large population into skilled human resources.
