Bangladesh is observing World Teachers’ Day today with various programmes, including a national ceremony to honour 100 outstanding teachers.

The day is being observed worldwide on October 5 under UNESCO’s initiative. This year’s theme is “Standing with Teachers: Sixty Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing its Status, Shaping Our Futures.”

As part of the celebrations, the Ministry of Education will organise the central Outstanding Teachers’ Honour ceremony at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka this afternoon.

For the first time, 100 teachers from primary to higher education will receive the national honour. The number has been increased from 12 to 100 to expand professional recognition and enhance the social status of teachers.

The recipients have been selected from different categories, including primary schools, secondary schools, colleges, general universities, medical colleges, agricultural universities, engineering universities, and science and technology institutions.

According to the government’s guidelines, the 100 awardees include 10 from primary education, 20 from secondary education, 25 from colleges, 20 from general universities, 10 from medical colleges, three from agricultural universities, three from engineering universities, four from science and technology and other specialised universities, and five under a special quota.

Each honoured teacher will receive Tk 2 lakh, a crest and a certificate of recognition, according to the latest announcement on the central ceremony.
