The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) has approved four new textbooks for Class 4 and Class 6 students for the 2027 academic year, while deciding to remove a controversial weighing-scales symbol from a Class 6 textbook following criticism.
The new books are Culture of Bangladesh and Sports for Class 4, and Learning with Happiness and My Technical Education for Class 6.
They received approval at separate meetings of the National Curriculum Coordination Committee (NCC) at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka on Sunday.
The books are designed to encourage creative thinking, moral values, practical skills and learning beyond rote memorisation and exam-oriented education.
Meanwhile, the NCTB has decided to remove the weighing-scales icon from the Class 6 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) textbook after controversy erupted over its use to represent wisdom. The symbol resembles the election symbol of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Under the revised decision, the textbook will retain the four levels of the knowledge pyramid—data, information, knowledge and wisdom—but will contain no icons representing them.
The NCTB has suspended printing of the ICT textbook and taken steps to collect copies already sent for distribution so they can be corrected before being supplied to students.
