Oman will recruit 10,000 workers from Bangladesh, including 5,000 farmers and 5,000 fishermen, Bangladesh Foreign Affairs State Minister Shama Obaed Islam said on Wednesday.
She made the disclosure while briefing reporters after a meeting with a delegation from Oman led by Al Sayyid Mohammed Salim Ali Al Said, a member of the Omani royal family, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Shama Obaed said the two governments had discussed the recruitment of Bangladeshi workers with Oman’s Ministry of Agriculture. An agreement has already been signed to recruit 5,000 farmers and 5,000 fishermen, she said.
An Omani delegation will visit Bangladesh next month to hold further discussions with the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, after which the recruitment process will be finalised, the state minister said.
Regarding the reopening of Omani visas for Bangladeshis, Shama Obaed said the government was making diplomatic efforts to restore regular travel to Oman.
“Oman’s visas have been closed for various reasons. This happened during the previous government. We are making diplomatic efforts so that Bangladeshis can travel to Oman regularly again,” she said.
She said Bangladesh was also focusing on skilled migration and had raised the issue with the Omani government.
“We want more skilled workers to go from Bangladesh and work in different sectors in Oman. They are also interested, and the two countries are working on this,” she added.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting also discussed ways to strengthen economic ties between Bangladesh and Oman, including opening Oman’s labour market further to Bangladeshi workers.
