Nepal has completely halted electricity exports to Bangladesh after devastating floods damaged hydropower plants supplying power to the country.
The August 26 flash floods in the Bhotekoshi River system damaged several hydropower facilities.
The Chilime (22.1 MW) and Trishuli (24 MW) plants, which were supplying electricity to Bangladesh, have suspended generation due to flood damage.
Nepal Electricity Authority officials said both projects supplying Bangladesh had been affected and that Nepal has sought permission from India to transmit electricity from alternative projects.
For now, however, exports to Bangladesh remain completely suspended.
Nepal normally exports around 1,000 MW of electricity during the monsoon season, but exports have fallen to about 650 MW following the disaster.
Twelve hydropower plants have reportedly stopped generation.
Nepal exported electricity worth Rs 29.32 billion to India and Bangladesh in fiscal year 2025–26.
