A convoy carrying uranium for the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka for the plant in Pabna under tight security on Saturday morning.
The convoy, comprising three lorries, began its journey at around 7:15am under the protection of the Bangladesh Army.
Members of the Special Security Force (SSF), police and various intelligence agencies were also involved in the security arrangements.
The uranium shipment arrived at the airport on a flight at around 11:30pm on Friday.
Officials of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority subsequently received the consignment before it was prepared for transportation to Rooppur under military security.
According to the plan, another nine flights are scheduled to bring uranium fuel assemblies for the Rooppur plant in November and December. The shipments will include 48 additional assemblies for the first unit and 163 for the second unit.
The consignments are scheduled to travel from Russia through Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India before reaching Bangladesh.
