The first shipment of uranium fuel for the second unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant arrived at the project site in Ishwardi, Pabna, under tight security on Saturday.

The convoy entered the plant premises at around 12:20pm, according to Pabna Deputy Commissioner Aminul Islam.

The shipment arrived in Dhaka from Russia aboard a special cargo aircraft late Friday night before being transported by road to Rooppur on Saturday morning.

The Bangladesh Army led the security arrangements, with members of the Special Response Battalion (SRB), police and intelligence agencies accompanying the convoy.

Special lorries carried the nuclear fuel to the plant under heightened security measures.

The shipment marks the beginning of fuel deliveries for the plant’s second unit.

The Rooppur facility, being built with Russian assistance, has two units with a combined planned generation capacity of 2,400 megawatts, or 1,200MW each.

Meanwhile, commissioning activities for the first unit are progressing, with further tests required before it can begin generating electricity for the national grid.
