BARISHAL: State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque today said the government planned to encourage households across the country to install biogas plants to help tackle the energy crisis.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at the inauguration of a biogas plant established under the Department of Youth Development in the Harinafulia area of Barishal city at 3:00pm.
Aminul said 81 biogas plants had already been installed in Barishal. Some entrepreneurs had set up the plants with loans, while others had received training from the Department of Youth Development.
Biogas could help address the energy crisis, protect the environment and create employment opportunities, he said.
Poultry droppings could produce more gas than cow dung, the state minister said, adding that the government was working to use biogas not only for cooking but also for electricity generation.
He said the project could provide gas and electricity over the long term, potentially for around 40 years.
Entrepreneurs could also earn money by selling surplus biogas after meeting their household needs, Aminul said. The government was providing training and financial assistance to help young people become self-reliant.
Alongside initiatives to develop skilled freelancers, 83 training programmes were currently under way, he said, expressing hope that these would help young men and women improve their financial well-being and that of their families.
The government was also working to empower young people and women through biogas projects, he added.
