Johnny Depp has made his long-awaited return to a major Hollywood production, with Paramount Pictures releasing the first trailer for Ebenezer, a dark new take on Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol.

Directed by Ti West, the film sees Depp take on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, portraying the miserly character in a gothic reimagining that blends horror with dark comedy.

The trailer shows Scrooge being haunted by the spirits of Christmas while spreading misery through snow-covered streets.

The trailer was unveiled during San Diego Comic-Con, where Depp surprised fans by appearing in character before introducing the first footage.
The film is set to be released in cinemas on 13 November.

Ebenezer marks Depp’s first major Hollywood role since his widely publicised legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard.

Since then, he has appeared in a handful of international productions, but the new film is being seen as his biggest return to a mainstream studio release.

The cast also includes Ian McKellen, Rupert Grint, Daisy Ridley and Andrea Riseborough, with the screenplay adapted from Dickens’ novel by Nathaniel Halpern.
