The Hindu community in Bangladesh is celebrating the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna and the auspicious Janmashtami festival today, Friday (September 4), with religious solemnity and festive enthusiasm.
According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Krishna was born on the eighth day of the waning moon in the month of Bhadra.
Devotees believe that Krishna appeared to restore righteousness, truth and justice and to defeat evil and oppression.
Various religious, social and cultural organisations, including the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad,
Mahanagar Sarbojanin Puja Committee and ISKCON, have arranged programmes marking the occasion.
These include prayers, Gita recitations, devotional songs, discussions, cultural events and processions.
The Mahanagar Sarbojanin Puja Committee has organised a central programme at Dhakeshwari National Temple, including a Gita yajna, a traditional Janmashtami procession and Krishna Puja.
Janmashtami is a public holiday in Bangladesh today. Special programmes are also being broadcast on Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and private television channels.
