The Hindu community is celebrating Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, today. On the occasion, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages on Thursday (September 3).
In their messages, they extended greetings to members of the Hindu community and called on all citizens to uphold communal harmony in the country.
President’s Message
In his message, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Janmashtami, marking the birth of Lord Krishna, is one of the major religious festivals of the Hindu community.
He described Lord Krishna as a philanthropist, skilled statesman and social reformer who appeared on Earth as a symbol of truth, justice and human welfare.
The President said Lord Krishna’s teachings against injustice and oppression have inspired people for generations to become more humane and compassionate.
Bangladesh has long been a country of communal harmony, he said, adding that secularism and a sense of unity are the core strengths of the country’s culture.
Mentioning the growing religious conflicts and divisions in different parts of the world, the President urged everyone to demonstrate patience and tolerance.
He expressed hope that people would draw lessons from Lord Krishna’s philosophy and contribute to building a secular and united Bangladesh.
Prime Minister’s Message
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman extended greetings to Hindus in Bangladesh and around the world on the occasion of Janmashtami.
He said maintaining social discipline, fraternity and communal harmony is the civic responsibility of everyone.
The Prime Minister urged all to remain vigilant so that no one could disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of communal harmony.
He said Lord Krishna set an outstanding example of love for humanity through his life and deeds and worked to establish justice, equality and peace in society.
People of all faiths in Bangladesh have practised their respective religions for generations while maintaining mutual respect and goodwill, he said.
The Prime Minister expressed hope that Lord Krishna’s message and teachings would further strengthen the bonds of fraternity in society and that collective efforts would help build a welfare-oriented Bangladesh.
