More than 16,000 police personnel have been deployed across Dhaka to ensure maximum security during the immersion of Durga idols, a senior Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) official said on Wednesday.

DMP Joint Commissioner (Operations) Md Shahidullah said idol immersion would take place at 33 locations across the capital, with the largest number of idols to be immersed at Wiseghat.

He made the remarks while briefing reporters at Palashi intersection on preparations for the immersion ceremonies.

Shahidullah said a procession would start from Dhakeshwari National Temple and end at Wiseghat, where the immersion rituals would take place. Idols were already being placed at designated locations for the procession, which was expected to begin shortly, he added.

Describing the security arrangements, the police official said uniformed DMP personnel had been deployed alongside members of the Detective Branch (DB), Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC), Special Response Unit (SRU), Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and the bomb disposal unit.

Members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) and SRB have also been assigned security duties.

Shahidullah said Durga Puja was being celebrated in Dhaka under the highest level of security arrangements and no untoward incident had been reported so far.

He expressed hope that the remaining festivities and immersion ceremonies would also pass peacefully.

The DMP official added that police were fully prepared to respond to any untoward situation and had taken all necessary measures to maintain security.
