The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has issued a five-point directive to ensure the regular presence of doctors at private hospitals and clinics and improve the quality of healthcare services.
All civil surgeons across the country have been instructed to take the necessary steps to implement the directives.
The instructions were issued in a letter signed by DGHS Director (Administration) Professor Dr. Jalal Uddin Mohammad Rumi on Tuesday (June 30).
According to the letter, all private hospitals and clinics are required to maintain an adequate number of doctors, nurses and cleaning staff in proportion to their bed capacity. In particular, a 50-bed hospital must have at least five medical officers on duty in each shift, ensuring a minimum of one medical officer for every 10 beds.
The DGHS has directed civil surgeons to implement the following measures:
- Collect monthly duty rosters of doctors from all private hospitals and clinics in their respective districts.
- Ensure that every private hospital and clinic submits an updated list of doctors, including their names, Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) registration numbers and mobile phone numbers, to the civil surgeon’s office.
- Conduct regular verification and surprise inspections based on the duty rosters and submitted information.
- Notify the DGHS for action under existing regulations if a hospital fails to maintain the required number of doctors or provides false or incomplete information.
- Submit a monthly summary report on monitoring activities to the DGHS by the 10th day of each month.
The DGHS said the directives have been issued to ensure safe, quality and uninterrupted healthcare services for patients and instructed all civil surgeons to implement them with the highest priority.
