The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is worsening, with infections and deaths continuing to rise, deepening concerns over the country’s public health crisis.
According to the latest government figures released on Saturday, the number of confirmed Ebola cases has reached 3,075, while at least 1,354 people have died from the disease.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said the current outbreak is one of the fastest-spreading Ebola epidemics in the continent’s history.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said the virus had been spreading quietly for weeks beyond the reach of local health authorities before the Congolese government officially declared a new outbreak on May 15 after the situation deteriorated.
Africa CDC said the outbreak is being driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. Health officials are particularly concerned because there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for this strain, making containment efforts more difficult.
Experimental treatments have already been launched in an effort to identify effective therapies and improve future responses. Researchers hope the clinical trials will provide valuable data for combating the disease.
However, the response faces major obstacles. Ongoing conflict, attacks by armed groups, and insecurity in eastern Congo have prevented health workers from accessing many affected communities. A shortage of international funding and humanitarian support has further complicated efforts to contain the outbreak.
