A special initiative has been launched at Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur to prevent dengue by identifying mosquito breeding grounds and destroying larvae using Japanese technology.
Under the programme, training and practical larvicide application activities were conducted at the prison on Monday by the Dengue Prevention Foundation Bangladesh (DPFB), Bangladesh’s Kaizen Connects Limited and Japan’s Earth Corporation.
Prison officials received hands-on training on identifying Aedes mosquito breeding sites, controlling larvae and properly applying larvicides. The jail superintendent, deputy jailer and officials from different levels attended the workshop.
DPFB Secretary General Dr Masud and senior entomologist Shariful Islam explained the mosquito’s life cycle, breeding habitats and control measures.
They said stagnant water containers and less noticeable places around homes and other premises could serve as breeding grounds, stressing the importance of regularly identifying and addressing such sites.
Following the training, larvicide tablets supplied by Japan’s Earth Corporation were applied at identified breeding spots inside the prison.
The tablets contain pyriproxyfen, an insect growth regulator that disrupts mosquito development and prevents larvae from developing into adult mosquitoes.
Shariful Islam supervised the application and demonstrated the correct dosage, application sites and methods to prison officials.
Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Kamal Hossain welcomed the initiative, saying coordinated efforts were important to reduce dengue risks among inmates and prison staff.
He said the programme aimed not only to raise awareness but also to strengthen the prison authorities’ capacity to regularly control mosquito breeding sites.
