A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking the suspension of the schedule for the presidential election and challenging the validity of Article 70 of the Constitution.
Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Yunus Ali Akand filed the petition on Thursday (August 13). The petition may be heard on Sunday.
The Chief Election Commissioner, the Secretary of the Parliament Secretariat and other relevant authorities have been made respondents in the writ.
The Election Commission (EC) announced the schedule for the presidential election on August 6. According to the schedule, voting is set to take place on August 20.
If there is more than one candidate, voting will be held in the Jatiya Sangsad chamber from 2:00pm to 5:00pm that day.
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed announced the election schedule. Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin will serve as the election officer.
According to the schedule, nomination papers are to be submitted from 10:00am to 4:00pm on August 13. Scrutiny of the nominations will take place on August 16, while the deadline for withdrawal of candidacy is August 18. Voting will be held on August 20.
