Husband sentenced to death for killing wife

Dhaka: A Dhaka court has sentenced Md. Sanaullah to death and fined him Tk 100,000 for killing his wife by pouring boiling water on her over a dowry demand in Kamrangirchar in 2006.

Judge Munsi Md. Mashiur Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 pronounced the verdict on Monday.

Public Prosecutor (PP) Ershad Alam George said Sanaullah was present in court when the verdict was delivered.

According to the case documents, Sanaullah beat his wife, Rubina Akter Pinky, on May 5, 2006, over a dowry demand. At one point, he poured boiling water heated on a kerosene stove over her body, leaving several parts of her severely burned.

Hearing her screams, local residents rescued Pinky and took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she later died while undergoing treatment.

Following the incident, Pinky’s mother, Rabia Akter, filed a murder case with Kamrangirchar Police Station against Sanaullah and nine others.

After investigation, Sub-Inspector Golam Mostafa of Kamrangirchar Police Station submitted the charge sheet to the court on November 20, 2006. As no preliminary evidence was found against the other accused, the investigation officer recommended their discharge.

During the trial, the prosecution produced testimony from nine witnesses. After examining the evidence, the court found Sanaullah guilty and sentenced him to death and fined him Tk 100,000.
