The International Crimes Tribunal has initiated steps to seek an Interpol Red Notice against former Bangladesh Army chief General (retd) Aziz Ahmed over allegations related to alleged crimes against humanity during the 2013 Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar in Dhaka and the following day’s incident in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj.
The tribunal’s Chief Prosecutor, Md Aminul Islam, sent a letter to the Inspector General of Police and the Additional Inspector General of the National Central Bureau (NCB) of Bangladesh Police, requesting necessary measures to issue the Red Notice against Aziz.
The Chief Prosecutor said authorities had learned that Aziz may have fled to a Middle Eastern country or elsewhere.
He expressed hope that Interpol cooperation would help bring him back to Bangladesh to face trial.
The letter also requested that the police inform the tribunal prosecution about progress and provide updates if further information is required.
Aziz Ahmed is among the accused in the case concerning the alleged killings during the Hefazat rally at Shapla Chattar.
The tribunal earlier accepted formal charges against 41 people in the case, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and several former ministers and senior Awami League figures.
The prosecution said it was the first initiative to seek Interpol assistance to bring back a fugitive accused in the Shapla Chattar case, adding that similar efforts would gradually be taken for other accused persons staying abroad.
