Tejgaon thana unit Jubo League president Md Abul Kashem Patwari, also known as ‘Hatkata’ Kashem, has been sent to jail in a case filed over an alleged attack on the motorcade of former prime minister Khaleda Zia and an attempted assassination.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir passed the order on Tuesday, said Arif Reza, an SI of the prosecution department.
Police arrested Kashem from the Karwan Bazar area of the capital on Monday. Investigation officer and Tejgaon Police Inspector Abdul Hannan produced him before the court on Tuesday and sought his detention in jail.
Kashem’s lawyer, Masud Khan, sought bail, arguing that his client was not involved in the incident and was not named in the case FIR. He alleged that Kashem had been arrested for political harassment.
After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail petition and ordered Kashem to be sent to jail.
According to the case statement, on April 20, 2015, Khaleda Zia joined an election campaign for BNP candidate Tabith Awal in the Dhaka North City Corporation mayoral election.
During the campaign, Awami League and its affiliated organisations allegedly attacked her motorcade in front of the BAPEX building in Karwan Bazar with the intention of killing her.
On August 22, 2024, Belal Hossain, general secretary of BNP’s Dhaka North unit Ward-26, filed the case against 113 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Other accused include former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Tejgaon thana Awami League president Abdur Rashid, general secretary and ward councillor Shamim Hasan, and former Dhaka North unit Chhatra League president Syed Mizanur Rahman.
