A total of 379 cases were filed within just three hours after AI-powered cameras began monitoring traffic violations on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway on Tuesday.
The AI cameras detected various violations between 11am and 2pm, triggering the automated fine system on the highway, according to Mohammad Shahinur Alam, superintendent of police of the Highway Police’s Cumilla region.
The surveillance covers around 250 kilometres of the highway from Jatrabari in Dhaka to Chattogram City Gate. A total of 1,427 cameras have been installed at 490 points along the route.
The cameras can automatically detect vehicle number plates and identify violations including speeding, failure to maintain designated lanes, dangerous overtaking, driving against traffic and illegal parking. Case notifications are sent to the registered vehicle owners via SMS.
According to the Highway Police, the Dhaka-Chattogram highway is the first in the country to introduce a fully automated AI-based traffic monitoring system.
In Dhaka, AI cameras are used only semi-automatically.
The Highway Police headquarters announced on Saturday that automated action against traffic violations on the highway would begin on August 18.
Vehicle owners will be able to pay fines through designated mobile financial services such as bKash and Nagad.
