The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been given more time to submit its further investigation report in the murder case of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, as the probe remains incomplete.
A Dhaka court on Thursday (August 20) set September 27 as the new date for submitting the report.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam passed the order.
According to court sources, Thursday was scheduled for submission of the further investigation report. However, the investigating officer, CID Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdul Kadir Bhuiyan, failed to submit it on the scheduled date, prompting the court to set a new deadline.
Earlier, on January 15, the case complainant and Inqilab Mancha Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber filed a no-confidence petition against the charge sheet submitted by the Detective Branch (DB). The court accepted the petition and ordered a fresh further investigation into the case.
According to the charge sheet, Hadi was killed over political rivalry. The investigation also found that obstructing the 13th parliamentary election and creating fear among voters were among the motives behind the killing.
According to the case statement, Hadi was travelling towards Suhrawardy Udyan after completing an election campaign in Motijheel on December 12 last year.
At around 2:20pm, when his auto-rickshaw reached the Box Culvert area under Paltan Model Police Station, assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire at him and fled.
He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition. After surgery, he was transferred to Evercare Hospital for advanced treatment. He was later flown to Singapore on December 15 for further treatment, where he died on December 18.
Abdullah Al Jaber filed an attempted murder case at Paltan Police Station on December 14 over the shooting. Following Hadi’s death, the case was converted into a murder case.
On January 6, the Detective Branch submitted a charge sheet against 17 people. The charge sheet named Faisal Karim Masud as the prime accused, along with former ward councillor Taizul Islam Chowdhury Bappi and others.
Following the complainant’s no-confidence petition, the court ordered a further investigation into the case. The CID has now been given until September 27 to submit its report.
