Detectives have sought another seven-day remand for Jamaat-e-Islami MP Gazi Nazrul Islam in a case filed over the alleged abetment of suicide of his second wife, Mariam.
Nazrul, MP for Satkhira-4, was produced before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after completing a four-day remand. Investigation officer Inspector Mohammad Salahuddin of the Detective Branch (DB) then sought another seven days to question him.
The remand hearing will be held before Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain, according to SI Rafiqul Islam of the prosecution department.
Nazrul is currently being held in the court lock-up and will be brought before the court during the hearing, said SI Morshed Alam, in-charge of the lock-up.
Police recovered the hanging body of Nazrul’s second wife, Mariam, from a flat at NAM Bhaban opposite the Parliament building on September 20. That night, police took Nazrul and his first wife, Maksuda Islam, into custody.
Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, later filed a case accusing Nazrul, Maksuda and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman of abetting her suicide.
The following day, a court granted Nazrul four days’ remand and Maksuda one day’s remand following a plea by Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police SI Md Shamsuzzoha Sarkar. The case was transferred to the DB that night.
In the case statement, Masum Billah alleged that Mariam, 19, married Nazrul in June at the “direct instigation” of her maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman.
Mariam had been living with Nazrul and Maksuda at Flat 203 of NAM Bhaban-5, opposite the Parliament building, according to the complaint.
The complaint further alleged that Mariam had told her family that Nazrul and Maksuda had subjected her to physical and mental abuse over various issues since the marriage.
