A case has been filed against Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman over allegations of creating disorder at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, obstructing government duties and assaulting an on-duty security official amid a shortage of luggage trolleys.
Airport security officer Md Shahriar Alam Sajib filed the case with Airport Police Station on Friday (October 2) under Sections 186, 189, 294, 323, 352, 353, 504 and 506 of the Penal Code.
Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamrul Hasan Talukdar confirmed the matter.
According to the case statement, a trolley shortage occurred around 10:40am on October 1 at baggage belt No. 8 after passengers of Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG338 from Medina arrived.
The delay in receiving luggage reportedly triggered anger and tension among the passengers.
Airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad went to the spot at the request of Dhaka-5 MP Mohammad Kamal Hossain to help control the situation.
The case statement alleges that Akhtaruzzaman approached the executive director aggressively and verbally abused him.
It further alleges that Akhtaruzzaman threatened to beat him and remove him from the airport by the neck.
The statement also says several protocol assistants accompanying Akhtaruzzaman were recording videos on mobile phones inside the airport’s restricted KPI area.
When security supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin asked them to stop, Akhtaruzzaman allegedly behaved abusively towards him and physically assaulted him.
He was also accused of throwing passengers’ bottles of Zamzam water from a trolley, causing damage, and behaving aggressively towards a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
Police said they would collect CCTV footage, witness statements and other evidence as part of the investigation. Legal action will be taken if the allegations are substantiated.
Akhtaruzzaman, a former BNP lawmaker, joined Jamaat-e-Islami in December 2025.
Separately, Biman has initiated departmental action against two officials over the delay in supplying luggage containing Zamzam water to passengers of the same flight.
