MP Nazrul denied bail despite settlement

A Dhaka court on Wednesday rejected the bail petition of MP Gazi Nazrul Islam in a case filed over the alleged abetment of the death of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.

Gazi Nazrul’s lawyer Mahbubur Rahman sought bail before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam, arguing that the accused had reached a settlement with Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, who had no objection to the bail.

The court, however, rejected the petition, meaning Gazi Nazrul will remain in jail for now.

The court had also rejected his bail petition on September 30, while granting bail to his first wife, Maksuda Islam, in the same case.

According to the case documents, police recovered Mariam’s hanging body from a flat at NAM Bhaban, opposite the Parliament complex in Dhaka, on September 20.

Her father subsequently filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station accusing Gazi Nazrul, Maksuda and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman of abetting her suicide.

Gazi Nazrul was placed on remand twice for a total of eight days before being sent to jail on September 28.

The case is currently being investigated by the Detective Branch of police.
