Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expelled Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party after an internal investigation found evidence of ethical misconduct.
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday following an emergency meeting of the party’s Central Executive Council.
The meeting, held at the official residence of the Leader of the Opposition on Minto Road in Dhaka, was chaired by Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, who is also a member of parliament. Members of the party’s Central Executive Council attended the session.
According to the statement, the party launched an organisational investigation after various media reports recently emerged concerning Gazi Nazrul Islam, the MP for Satkhira-4.
The investigation found evidence of what the party described as “moral misconduct,” prompting the Central Executive Council to expel him under Article 62 of the party’s constitution.
Jamaat also decided to immediately inform the Bangladesh Election Commission of Gazi Nazrul’s expulsion from the party.
The statement did not disclose further details about the allegations or specify the impact of the decision on his parliamentary membership.
