Detectives have detained two daughters of a police officer among 84 people picked up during a raid on a rented house in the capital’s Bhatara area over alleged drug use and unauthorised parties.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) conducted the raid at a three-storey house in the Police Housing-1 area under Bhatara Police Station on Monday night, October 19, and continued the operation until Tuesday afternoon.
The house belongs to Abdullah Al Zahir, an additional deputy inspector general (DIG) serving at Police Headquarters.
He had reportedly rented out the property through Airbnb, an online short-term accommodation platform.
According to police sources, the detainees include 26 women and an Afghan national.
The two daughters of a police officer were also among those detained, although their identities have not been disclosed.
Police launched the operation after receiving intelligence that the premises were being used for drug consumption, drug dealing and unauthorised DJ parties.
During the raid, detectives reportedly seized cannabis, yaba tablets, alcohol and equipment used to consume drugs.
Investigators are examining how the property was managed and whether drugs were supplied for gatherings held there.
DB officials said the house was managed by a host and a co-host, with co-host Mahbubul Alam among those detained.
Deputy Commissioner of DB’s Uttara Division Ilias Kabir said the property had been rented out through Airbnb.
Following the incident, Abdullah Al Zahir was removed from his previous assignment and attached to Police Headquarters, according to reports.
Police said legal action would be taken against those detained. Investigators are also looking into the alleged activities at the property and the roles of the people involved.
The identities of the police officer’s two daughters and the specific allegations against them have not been publicly disclosed. Their detention does not, by itself, establish their involvement in any criminal activity.
