BAGERHAT: Twenty-seven police personnel have been sent to jail over alleged involvement in drugs in the past two months, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has said.
He made the disclosure while addressing a community policing rally organised by the Bagerhat district police at the Bagerhat Police Lines on Sunday morning.
The rally was organised to raise public awareness, strengthen community policing and build mutual trust and cooperation between the police and the public. Bagerhat Superintendent of Police Md Jamirul Islam chaired the event.
Khulna Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Md Rezaul Karim and Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner Golam Md Baten attended the programme as special guests.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, the IGP said, “You journalist brothers make use of the police. Unless we strengthen the police, none of us will be able to move around comfortably in society, day or night.”
He said economic progress was essential for the country’s development and prosperity, as well as for improving people’s living standards. Unemployment remained a major challenge, he said, adding that 2.5 million to 3 million educated people join the ranks of the unemployed every year.
He further said the police must be made effective and stronger to maintain peace, security and stability in society. Cooperation between the police and the public would make crime prevention and improvements in law and order easier, he added, stressing the important role of journalists and people from different walks of life.
Speaking about the anti-drug campaign, Ali Hossain Fakir said the police maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs.
“Everyone must come forward to eliminate drugs and protect society from their devastating effects. Families, educational institutions, public representatives and concerned citizens must work together, particularly to protect the younger generation from drug abuse,” he said.
He also called for public cooperation to eliminate juvenile gangs, stressing the need to raise social awareness, strengthen family supervision and engage young people in positive activities. He said crime prevention should not be left to the police alone and that citizens must also play a responsible role.
“Over the past two months, I have sent 27 police personnel to jail over drugs. Let us clean our own house first; then you can clean yours,” the IGP said.
