Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has said police will not hesitate to conduct crossfire if necessary, provided the government approves it.
He made the remarks on Monday (October 26) at a ceremony marking the formal launch of Islamic banking services by Community Bank in Chawkbazar.
The IGP said police were necessary to ensure people could live in peace and security. However, he cautioned that freedom did not mean people could do whatever they wanted.
Urging people not to take the law into their own hands, he also said it was inappropriate to blame the police for every incident.
Fakir also raised concerns over the spread of drugs in neighbourhoods and alleged that some police personnel, alongside members of the ousted Awami League, were involved in the drug trade.
He further said 27 police personnel had been suspended over the past two months.
Regarding former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s return to Bangladesh, the IGP said it was not a matter for the police to decide. However, he warned that police would take legal action against anyone who created any form of unrest in the country.
