A court in Dhaka has rejected the bail application of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman in a case filed over alleged obstruction of official duties and misconduct with officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Dhaka Metropolitan Special Judge Court-5 Judge Salekin Habib Bappi passed the order on Monday (October 26). Advocate Shishir Monir appeared at the hearing.
The court had earlier rejected his bail plea on October 4, following a one-day remand in the same case.
Akhtaruzzaman was arrested on October 2 over allegations of creating disorder at the airport amid a dispute over luggage and trolleys, obstructing government duties and physically assaulting a security official on duty.
Airport security official Md Shahriar Alam Sajib filed the case with Airport Police Station.
Following the arrest, the investigation officer sought a five-day remand for Akhtaruzzaman. After a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir granted one day of remand.
According to the case statement, 34 representatives of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, accompanied by their family members, arrived in Dhaka from Madinah on October 1. Their flight landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 8:55am and was parked at 9:08am.
After completing immigration procedures, the passengers went to baggage belt No. 8 to collect their luggage.
The complaint said an unusually high volume of arriving passengers had caused a temporary shortage of trolleys, resulting in long queues. Some protocol assistants allegedly tried to collect trolleys by violating the queue rules.
The situation reportedly escalated as some passengers became agitated over delays in receiving their luggage and the unavailability of Zamzam water, leading to disorder at the airport.
The case was filed under several sections of the Penal Code.
