Jamaat-e-Islami leader and former lawmaker Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman was produced before a Dhaka court on Sunday after completing a one-day remand in a case filed over alleged obstruction of government duties and misconduct with officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

He was produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Sunday (October 4) and is currently being kept in the court lock-up.

On Saturday, the court granted police one day to question Akhtaruzzaman after investigators had sought five days’ remand.

The case was filed on Thursday following an incident at the airport over a shortage of luggage trolleys. According to the case statement, Akhtaruzzaman allegedly argued with and threatened HSIA Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad.

He is also accused of misbehaving with and physically assaulting a security official after being stopped from filming in a restricted area, throwing bottles of Zamzam water and behaving aggressively towards a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

The Detective Branch arrested Akhtaruzzaman from his residence in the Dhaka Cantonment area on Friday and later showed him arrested in the Airport Police Station case.

While being taken to court on Saturday, Akhtaruzzaman told reporters, “Our struggle cannot be stopped through repression.” He also criticised the management of the state, saying, “State mismanagement cannot continue.”

When police attempted to handcuff him and put a helmet on his head, he objected and later threw the helmet away. He was also seen chanting “Inquilab Zindabad” and “Bangladesh Zindabad”.
