Authorities have strengthened security in Gazipur by increasing the deployment of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel and executive magistrates amid ongoing protests by garment workers demanding higher wages and other benefits.
The number of BGB platoons has been increased from 10 to 11, while the number of executive magistrates has risen from 21 to 25.
Mohammad Arif Hossain, assistant commissioner of the media and research cell at the Gazipur Deputy Commissioner’s Office, confirmed the development on Tuesday morning (November 3).
The BGB personnel will work under the leadership of the executive magistrates to maintain law and order and prevent further unrest in the industrial areas.
According to the district administration, no major highways or regional roads had been occupied by workers at the time of filing this report.
Workers were also seen entering various industrial establishments in groups to join their workplaces.
Authorities said security forces remained alert to maintain public safety and protect government property amid the continuing labour unrest.
