The High Court has granted interim bail to Shahjalal Rumi, who is accused in a case filed over an alleged attack and vandalism at a madrasa in Tongi, Gazipur, and directed him to surrender before the Gazipur Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court within four weeks.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Md Selim and Justice Md Asif Hasan passed the order on Tuesday (November 3).
The case was filed following allegations that Rumi and several others attacked and vandalised Qariul Quran International Madrasa in Tongi over an incident involving the alleged sexual abuse of a seven-year-old girl.
According to the complaint filed by the madrasa’s principal, Rumi was accused of assault, vandalism and looting Tk 17 lakh from the institution.
The incident came to light after allegations surfaced that a teacher at the madrasa had sexually abused the child.
The teacher, Md Moslem Uddin, was subsequently arrested following a case filed by the child’s family.
Rumi later sought legal protection from the High Court, filing an anticipatory bail petition on October 26.
Following Tuesday’s hearing, the court granted him interim bail and ordered him to surrender before the lower court within four weeks.
Advocate Bellal Hossain, one of Rumi’s lawyers, confirmed the court order.
