Police have arrested the helper of a bus in connection with the alleged attempted rape of a female garment worker aboard a moving bus in Ashulia, a week after the incident.

The accused, Kawshar Hossain Sanzid, 25, a helper of Itihash Paribahan, was arrested from Gazipur on Monday with the help of information technology, police said.

Ashulia Police Station Sub-Inspector Anwar Hossain PPM said Sanzid had been hiding in the Shah Alam Bari area under Basan Police Station in Gazipur, where he had taken a job driving a courier service vehicle.

He was tracked down and arrested on Monday night, the officer said.

Police had earlier seized the bus allegedly used in the incident, Dhaka Metro-B-15-8508, and arrested its driver, Azizul Sikder.

According to the case statement, the incident took place on the night of July 12 when the victim was travelling back to her workplace after visiting her home district of Dinajpur.

She boarded an Itihash Paribahan bus bound for Savar after getting off at Chandra intersection.

Police said that after the bus reached Sripur Bus Stand, all the other passengers got off.

The driver and helper then allegedly refused to allow any new passengers to board.

The woman became frightened and repeatedly asked the driver to stop so she could get off.

Instead, the bus allegedly continued at high speed.

Police said Sanzid was allegedly driving the bus at one point during the incident.

The woman eventually jumped from the moving bus in an attempt to save herself and sustained serious injuries.
