Taliban govt suspends BBC FM Radio broadcasts in Afghanistan

The Taliban government in Afghanistan has suspended BBC FM radio broadcasts across the country, accusing the British broadcaster of “repeated violations” of media regulations.

The suspension was confirmed by the BBC on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. A spokesperson for the broadcaster said the BBC was working with Afghan authorities to resolve the issue.

“Millions of people across Afghanistan rely on the BBC for accurate news and information,” the spokesperson said.

Taliban officials have not specified the alleged violations that prompted the decision.

Despite the suspension of FM transmissions, the BBC said it would continue to provide independent and impartial news in Pashto, Dari and English through shortwave and medium-wave radio, online platforms and satellite services.

The move further restricts access to independent news in Afghanistan, where the Taliban have tightened controls over the media since returning to power in 2021.

The BBC has been broadcasting to Afghan audiences for decades, providing news and educational programmes to millions of people across the country.
